Introduction

Barbara Kingsolver was born in Kentucky in 1955. She studied both science and creative writing and, after graduating from a university in Indiana, she worked as a science writer at the University of Arizona. Her novel, The Poisonwood Bible, is an international bestseller. To Kingsolver, writing is a form of political activism. She has written that in her twenties she "began to understand how a person could write about the problems the world in a compelling and beautiful way." She has said that writing should "improve" on real life.
